The City Clerk’s Office Presents the Monthly Board Member Spotlight:
Deniz aydemir, bicycle and pedestrian advisory commission
1. Why would you encourage someone in the community to apply to be on a board, committee, or commission?
Joining a board is one of the best ways that I’ve seen to have an acute impact as a volunteer in Durham. Many of us have ideas about how our communities can be improved, and these boards are places where we can ask the questions we have and test the possibilities of what can be done. It’s also a great way to learn about how different processes and organizations work together within the city, county, and greater region.
2. What do you enjoy most about serving on your particular board?
Everyone on BPAC has a passion for improving the built environment and making our communities more walkable, bikeable, and transit-friendly. It’s great to be in a group with these shared priorities and an urgency to make an impact in Durham. The commission members are also all very kind and encouraging, making it a welcoming place to ask questions and learn from each other.
3. What is your favorite part about living in Durham?
Exploring the old and new nooks and crannies of the city.
