[ARCHIVED] June 2023 Spotlight: Juilee Malavade

Juilee Malavade

The City Clerk’s Office Presents the Monthly Board Member Spotlight:

JUILEE MALAVADE, DURHAM CITY-COUNTY ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS BOARD

1.       Why would you encourage someone in the community to apply to be on a board, committee, or commission?

Joining a board has allowed me to understand the interconnected meshwork of decisions made in our city that affect our day to day living. I have been incredibly fortunate to work alongside some of the most intelligent, insightful environmentalists in Durham in advising City Council and the County Commissioners on sustainability and environmental policy. I would encourage community members to apply to serve on a board to present community perspectives to local government and to advocate for the changes they would like to see in their city.

 2.      What do you enjoy most about serving on your particular board?

I most enjoy working alongside our talented sustainability experts, staff, and ex officios. After each EAB meeting, I am amazed by how we holistically address agenda items, considering equity and environmental efficacy in all our recommendations to City Council and County Commissioners. The EAB’s engagement has been instrumental for envisioning sound environmental policy for everyone in Durham.

3.      What is your favorite part about living in Durham?

Durham supports an incredible variety of native plants and wildlife! Every spring, Keep Durham Beautiful does a BioBlitz to catalog the biodiversity of Durham and I get so excited to document all the little bugs, animals, and plants I see. Added bonus, the honeysuckle smells amazing during forest walks in the springtime!
