A Word from Wanda
Enhancing the GoDurham Rider ExperienceEvery day, thousands of Durham residents rely on GoDurham’s 24 bus routes to get to work or class, run errands, attend appointments, and other essential activities. We want their bus rides to be reliable, comfortable, convenient, and safe, and have launched the Better Bus Project to make enhancements over the coming year. Funded with $1.5 million from the Durham County Transit Plan, the project will identify and design improvements to sidewalks, streets, and bus stops to improve the entire bus riding experience in Durham – from walking to waiting to riding – such as: - A sidewalk gap or crosswalk project that makes your walk to the bus stop safer
- A new bus shelter that makes your wait for the bus more comfortable
- A traffic signal change that helps your bus arrive on time
These are important investments for our riders, more than 80% who are people of color, 75% who have household incomes less than $25,000, and more than two-thirds live in zero-car households. As the project gets underway, we will look to GoDurham riders and other Durham residents for input to help us identify and prioritize improvements. Whether you ride the bus, are passionate about public transportation, or looking for ways to get involved, I encourage you to learn more about this project by exploring the Better Bus Project website. Until next week, Wanda

Thursday, March 11, 7 p.m. Watch the event on WRAL or via live stream The pandemic has given us a preview of life without live concerts, art openings, or book readings, and we don't like what we've seen. The arts in the Triangle lost over $35 million in revenues during this difficult time. That’s why arts councils from Chatham, Durham, Orange, and Wake Counties, in partnership with WRAL-TV, are joining forces to rally support around the arts through a live event – Big Night In for the Arts. Proceeds will fund arts programming, initiatives for equity in the arts, and arts relief efforts. Branford Marsalis, Ariana DeBose, Scotty McCreery, Mandolin Orange, and Mike Wiley have stepped up to perform and champion this cause. Plus many other local performers and artists will be highlighted as well. Learn more about the event and how to donate at BigNightIn.org.
