Durham's New Comprehensive Plan UpdateDurham is working on a new Comprehensive Plan, a long-range vision for our community! The Comprehensive Plan guides what can be built where in Durham. The full draft of the new Comprehensive Plan is ready for community review and input! Online engagement through the project’s Social Pinpoint website has launched. Engagement will be open until Monday, March 20 – please plan to review the plan, attend a meeting, and provide your input either online or in person! In addition to online engagement, community members are invited to attend any of the remaining open house style in-person meetings to review the full draft and share their feedback directly with Planning staff. Childcare for the in-person meetings will be provided (by The Safety Nest, LLC) as well as light snacks, masks, and hand sanitizer. Materials in both English and Spanish along with bilingual staff will be available at all of the meetings.

For the final meeting, Planning staff is partnering with the City’s Office on Youth to create a more youth- and family-friendly space and a celebration of the project that will be open to all. This engagement will be a chance to see all the pieces pulled together into one document, to better understand how it all works together, and to celebrate what we have accomplished together. During this engagement we will also be sharing information on how community members can continue to be involved in the project as the public hearing and adoption process begins. TEMPORARY UPDATES TO REVIEW TIMEFRAMESDue to the current and upcoming vacancies within our organization, Durham Development Services has temporarily revised review timelines for several review processes. These extended timeframes will allow us to provide and meet clear expectations for when comments or approvals will be distributed to applicants. Last summer, the Durham Planning Commission initiated a text amendment with the goal of making a more connected community. To achieve this goal, the amendment proposes various rules for developers which would limit the length of streets and promote more pedestrian connections to nearby, existing networks. Specifically, the amendment includes updates to the existing connectivity ratio that ensures developers are providing sufficient road and pedestrian networks within new developments and adequately connecting to adjacent areas or neighborhoods. The amendment also includes a new block length component which limits the allowed length of the streets or street blocks that developer can build to help ensure our communities are built to human scale, closely connected, and walkable.

The Comprehensive Plan guides what should be built where in Durham.
