Join us at the Listening and Learning Workshops, ENGAGEDurham’s first community engagement event. As someone who lives, works, owns a business, goes to school or simply cares about the future of Durham, your opinions and ideas are valued.

All five Listening and Learning Workshops (identical in format and content) are scheduled between November 14-19 in locations throughout the community. Doors open 30 minutes early. Each workshop will be about two hours long. Spanish interpretation, free child care and light refreshments will be provided.

If you’re passionate about shaping Durham’s future this is your chance for your voice to be an integral part of the Comprehensive Plan process. Bring your ideas to one of the workshops listed below:

Applicant-Sponsored Neighborhood Meetings


The John R. McAdams Company, INC. is hosting a neighborhood meeting to discuss a potential change to the Future Land Use Map for the properties located at 5321 and 5421 Chin Page Road. The proposal includes changing the land use designation from Industrial to Office. In addition, the proposal includes a zoning map change from Industrial Light (IL) to Office and Institutional (OI).
The meeting will be held on November 7, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. in the Media Center at Bethesda Elementary School, 2009 S. Miami Boulevard, Durham, N.C. 27703.

Horvath and Associates is hosting a neighborhood meeting to discuss a potential change to the Future Land Use Map for the property located at 995 Old Oxford Road (intersection of Carver Street and Old Oxford Road). The proposal includes changing the land use designation from Industrial and Commercial to all Commercial. In addition, the proposal includes a zoning map change from Industrial Light (IL), Commercial Center (CC) and Commercial Neighborhood (CN) to Commercial General (CG).

Certificates of Appropriateness

  • 2403 West Club Boulevard (COA1900089): A request submitted to enclose the existing engaged side porch, finish the attic, and replace the deteriorated rear addition with a new breakfast room and laundry room on the same footprint.
  • 808 Berkeley Street (COA1900090): A request submitted for the installation of a shed dormer to be erected on the back side of an existing A-frame roof.

  • TC1900002 –Outdoor Lighting is a privately-initiated amendment to Sec. 7.4.2B.2 of the UDO regarding lighting for outdoor recreational activities.
  • TC1900005 – Affordable Housing Dwelling Unit Definition is an amendment to revise the definition of “affordable housing dwelling unit” in Sec. 17.3, Defined Terms.

  • TC1900003 FEMA Firm Updates is a text amendment to Sec. 8.4, Floodplain and Flood Damage Protection Standards, to adopt revised flood insurance rate map (FIRM) panels issued by FEMA.
