1. What is smoke testing?

Smoke testing is a routinely used procedure during which smoke is forced into a gravity sewer line using a fan or blower at low pressure. If there are any holes, cracks or other defects in the sewer line, smoke will seep through and visually identify the problem area.

2. Is the smoke toxic?

The smoke that is introduced is non-toxic to humans and animals. It does have a slight odor and is white to gray in color but it will not create stains. Smoke used in smoke testing is not a fire hazard. If you do come into contact with the smoke, please wash affected areas with soap and water.

3. As a property owner, is there anything I need to do before smoke testing is performed in my neighborhood?

It is advisable to pour a gallon of water into sinks, tubs and floor drains that are not used every day. This will fill certain pipes in your plumbing which will prevent smoke from entering the building.

4. What is sewer cleaning?

Cleaning of the sanitary sewer system is a preventative maintenance requirement by the state regulatory agency. Jet trucks are the most common method of sewer cleaning and are expected to be utilized during this project. A jet truck utilizes pressurized water to clean sewer pipes by pulling a large specialized water hose through the sewer.

5. Will the cleaning affect me?

There will be no disruptions to your sewer service during the cleaning. However, the City of Durham recommends that residents leave their toilet seats down when not being used in the improbable event back pressure from the cleaning causes toilets to bubble. Jet trucks are noisy and may be noticeable to nearby residents.

6. What is closed circuit television and will it affect me?

Closed circuit television (CCTV) video inspection is accomplished by a remote controlled apparatus being pulled or driven through a sanitary sewer pipe with a recording video camera. There will be no service interruptions during the CCTV inspection process.
